Joy Jones, M.A., Marriage and Family Therapist Associate

Joy Jones is a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate with a permit to practice in Kentucky. She began her journey to becoming a therapist many years ago. Even prior to becoming a clinician, she has always had a innate desire to help others and to sit with those who are struggling. She has provided care to moms with unplanned pregnancies in a crisis pregnancy center, worked in a group home for teen girls in the foster care system, worked with women and children who have escaped sex trafficking as a safe house staff, worked with many children and parents involved in the child welfare system, and traveled the world loving and serving people in need, all of this before she decided to go to school to become a therapist! She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2013 and then later went on to earn her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counseling from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 2020.

During her time in graduate school, she received training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to more effectively help her clients process and heal from trauma. In 2022 she obtained extra training to become a Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) Practitioner in order to better serve kids and families from hard places. Every training she has received has been in an effort to become even more equipped to serve her clients and help walk with them to healing and wholeness. Clients she is equipped to counsel are children (ages 4 and up), adolescents, adults, and families. Her approach to counseling is relational, solutions-focused, biblically based, and clinically grounded. Humor and play also play a role in her therapy approach. Joy loves learning, and seeks to consistently be pursuing knowledge to best serve her clients.

She considers it a sacred honor to walk alongside her clients in their struggles and celebrations. She values authentic connection between self, others, and God as high priorities in her own life and she desires to help others connect in these ways as well.

She and her family moved to Russell County, Kentucky in the summer of 2023. Joy may not have been born in Kentucky, but to her, Kentucky feels like home. She and her husband have three boys, Carson (6), Gryffin (4), and Theo (1), an Aussiedoodle named Rocky, and a flock of 24 chickens. Joy keeps asking for goats but her husband has vetoed adding to the chaos! When she’s not working or chasing her kiddos around, she can be found in local coffee shops behind her computer, planning her family’s next outdoors adventure, or tending to her houseplants and garden outdoors.

Joy is committed to providing a nurturing environment for her clients, where they can feel comfortable enough to open up and experience genuine healing. She genuinely hopes to offer you the same level of support and understanding.

So you have some questions…

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?

Well, the only real way to know is to come in for a session to find out! Typically, people know very early on, even in the initial phone call if they may be a good fit with the therapist. I try to provide enough in my about me section for potential clients to begin to determine if they may think I could be a good fit for them. Ultimately, by the end of session two most all people are certain about whether or not I am the professional they feel confident working with.

Do you take my insurance?

Maybe! I accept all Kentucky medicaid plans. I also accept some other insurance plans.

If you don’t have medicaid or other insurance, consider the following:

A therapist’s rate usually reflects the amount of training and experience the therapist has in their field. Being a therapist can be just as expensive as any other business owner. In addition to getting a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, completing 2 years of associate licensure in which you’re paid at a lower rate, therapists also have to think about continuing education requirements, license applications and exams, liability insurance, electronic health record programs, trainings, and therapy supplies. In addition to these therapist-specific expenses, we also have typical business expenses like rent, utilities, office supplies, accounting fees, and technology supplies. While the full rate can seem like a big expense, the therapist is not taking all of that home.

I have set my standard rate after much thought. It reflects the average income for our county. Additionally, I have a sliding scale and some significantly discounted spaces available for specific types of clients. If you think you may qualify for reduced counseling or a sliding scale, let me know and we can discuss.

How much does therapy with you cost?

The standard rate for individual counseling is $70 per 50-minute session. For individuals who meet the income requirements I offer a sliding scale based on gross (before tax) income. The scale is as follows:
$25,000 and less – $25
$25,001 – $30,000 – $30
$30,001 – $35,000 – $35
$35,001 – $40,000 – $40
$40,001 – $45,000 – $45
$45,001 – $50,000 – $50
$50,001 – $55,000 – $55
$55,001 – $60,000 – $60

After hours sessions are offered at or above the standard rate and sliding scale or discounted rates cannot be applied.

Why do I need to see a therapist? Can’t I just talk to my friend or family member for free?

While I’m sure your friend or family member is an awesome human being and provides you support, therapists are trained to do a specific job that your friend just isn’t. Treating your friend like a therapist can harm the friendship. You don’t have to worry about dominating the conversation in therapy, the focus is supposed to be entirely on you! The therapeutic relationship is a professional, time limited relationship with goals to help better your mental health. You don’t need to feel guilty about focusing on your needs. You don’t have to fear judgement in therapy. You don’t have to worry about your business being exposed or shared with others because confidentiality is a vital aspect of the therapeutic relationship.

Therapists have extensive training in mental health and behavior theory. They have paid a lot of money and done a lot of work to be equipped to help your. They know how to ask the challenging questions that will guide you to the growth and healing you need. They have the skills and tools to help you challenge negative beliefs and patterns. Therapists do not give advice, they help you reflect on your choices and create healthier habits and patterns and work through the things from your history that are hindering your growth and happiness.

How long does therapy last?

This depends on you and your goals. I typically start with one session weekly for a while (usually about 3 months) until clients get in a good groove and are making progress towards their goals for therapy. Once this is happening, we may taper down to every other week then monthly for however long it takes. It is not recommended to begin with less frequency as it reduces the likelihood of success and good outcomes in counseling.

Every person is different and their goals and needs for therapy are different. Your struggles and hurts didn’t happen overnight and they won’t be healed overnight. I promise to be as efficient as possible with your treatment plan so that you can get the most healing from the shortest amount of time.

Do you provide in person or online therapy?

Both! I see clients in person in my office on Main Street in Russell Springs, KY as well as online. Online therapy sessions are conducted in a secure teletherapy platform. Not everyone is a good fit for teletherapy. I require my clients to have a quiet, private place with sufficient internet connection where they can take part in sessions.
